Sr. Director, Main Operating Room
Boston Children's Hospital
Andrew T. Smith MSN, RN, NE-BC, CPN, Senior Director, Nursing & Patient Care Services at Boston Children's Hospital, began his career as an operating room nurse at Cincinnati Children's Hospital where he found his passion for the neurosurgery and trauma patient populations. As a staff nurse, Andrew worked diligently as the chair of the OR unit practice council and thoroughly enjoyed teaching new orientees, students, and co-ops. After finishing his MSN, Andrew went on to teach at Xavier University as an adjunct faculty member. Turning his sights to leadership, Andrew has had progressive opportunities to advance. Andrew was a Clinical Manager of the Specialty Resource Unit at Cincinnati Children’s for 4 years and then accepted his first OR Director of Surgical Services position at Saint John’s Health in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Turning his sights back to his true passion, pediatric patients, Andrew went on to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Children's Health as the Clinical Operations Director overseeing planning and construction for a new pediatric ambulatory surgery center and children's hospital tower. Andrew's new position in Boston began alongside the arrival of Covid-19 and he was faced with a new set of unexpected challenges as he assimilated into his new role. Andrew re-structured the leadership team in the Main OR by hiring and supporting service line clinical coordinators and creating a dedicated OR Training Manager solely focused on orientation and PeriOp 101 trainees. Recently, the Main OR expanded into a new clinical building with new workflows and the implementation of a case cart system. Setting eyes on the future, Andrew is leading efforts for the OR Renewal project that will encompass a complete renovation of the perioperative space over the next give years. Andrew enjoys quality and improvement projects that improve patient safety and staff satisfaction.
