Program Director, Perioperative Nurse Training Program – East Coast Naval Medical Center Portsmouth
A native of Manassas, Virginia, Commander Sherrill earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Norfolk State University and commissioned as a Navy Nurse Corps Officer in 2005. Her Naval nursing career began as a staff nurse on the post-partum unit at Naval Hospital Okinawa, Japan and after two years she transitioned to the medical-surgical unit where she focused on becoming an operating room nurse.
After completion of the Perioperative 101 program at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, Florida, she transitioned to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth where she became the Charge Nurse for General Surgery, Pediatric General Surgery, Urology and Assistant Division Officer for Alpha Division, Main Operating Room. She served as the Department Head, Main Operating Room and Surgery Clinic at Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay, Cuba providing surgical services to military members, their families, civilians, and detainees. In 2013 while in Guantanamo Bay, she earned her Masters of Science in Health Science with a focus in health education from Trident University. She served as Department Head over 7 pre-operative, intraoperative, and post-operative divisions at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, Florida. As part of humanitarian assistance efforts, she served as the nursing and surgical liaison for both the planning and execution for Continuing Promise 2017. She worked with host nation medical providers and non-government organizations to establish the needs of the population within Guatemala, Honduras and Colombia.
Operationally, Commander Sherrill served as the Assistant Officer in Charge and perioperative nurse for Fleet Surgical Team 4 on the USS Bataan (LHD-5) with Phibron 8 and the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, providing direct casualty and trauma care throughout the Amphibious Readiness Group in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. As part of humanitarian disaster relief, she led and integrated a 20-person surgical medical augment on LHD-5 in support of the Department of Defense response efforts for Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas.
Upon her transition to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia, Commander Sherrill became the Clinic Manager, Brain and Spine Surgery Clinic. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, she provided COVID-19 vaccination support in conjunction with FEMA to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. As the Senior Nurse, she was charged with the day-to-day management and staffing models for 143 officers and corpsmen increasing vaccination capabilities and ensuring the vaccination of over 300,000 Massachusetts residents. In 2022, Commander Sherrill transitioned into the Program Director for the Perioperative Nurse Training Program on the East Coast.
Her personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards).
