SSM Health
Mel Thompson has worked in and around the Perioperative setting for more than 22 years. Mel started her career in the Operating Room as a Surgical Technologist, scrubbing all of the services provided, taking a special interest in Cardiovascular and Neuro Surgery. Once completing an Associate Degree in nursing school in 2011, Mel stayed in the OR and continued providing exceptional patient care to surgical patients in the Circulating role. During this time, she taught Surgical Technology part time at the local Technical College, helping to prepare learners for roles in the surgical setting. Since January of 2018, Mel has worked as the RN Clinical Educator for Perioperative Services, most recently serving the WI Region for her organization. While in this role, she has earned her Bachelor's of Science-Nursing, and is two semesters away from completing a Masters degree in Nursing Education.
Mel has a strong focus in professional development, certification, evidence based practice, and engaging education that adds value to daily work. She has encouraged nurses to continue their education path, become certified in their specialties, taught nurses to explore their practice through research and evidenced base practice, all while preparing and presenting education to staff and leaders in a fun, active, and engaging way. Mel is able to continue her own professional development through her local AORN Chapter, and currently serves as the Chapter Secretary. She is a lifelong learner, always seeking out ways to enhance patient care, and support perioperative staff nurses, and leaders.
